498, living through hell in the middle of winter. Last time, the fighting around

Rijev had been going the Soviets way. After all, men from the Kalinin Front had been able to

swing above Rijev and start to come down south behind it. Then there was Major General Belov and his

first guards cavalry corps, which had gone into enemy territory to help surround Rijev. And finally,

there were the thousands of Soviet paratroopers who were to have

acted as a linchpin to this entire operation. But then, the Germans counterattacked, and those

heady days and Soviet dreams were over. The salient behind Rijev was now stopped and isolated,
