Last time, for whatever reason, General Paulus had no intention of even trying to escape Stalingrad,

which would have been good for General Manstein to know as he had moved heaven and earth to mount a rescue operation that had caused him

men and tanks. But now that another Soviet attack had been launched on December 16th to the west

of the city going through the Italian 8th Army, it was a moot point.

It was now time to embrace, or rather endure whatever the Soviets were up to this time.

And what the Soviets were up to was attacking the airfield at Tatskenskaya, about 260 kilometers

or 161 miles west of Stalingrad.

This specific attack got underway at 5.20 a.m. on December 24th.

The reason for attacking here was that this airfield was the main one used by the Luftwaffe

to supply the trapped 6th Army. By the time the attack was

over, the Germans pushed the Soviets away and retook the area. 72 of the 196 transport planes

had been destroyed. Supplying the 6th Army had been a herculean task to begin with. Now it went from harder to almost impossible.
