detectives and crime fighters.

This week our focus isn't on a particular character or a particular series, but rather on an

author, one of the fathers of the hard-boiled school of American crime fiction.

He's James M. Kane, who along with Dashilhamid and Raymond Chandler helped to refine and tool the genre into what we know and love today.

Kane's novels were not only hits in print, they were adapted into several acclaimed movies, including classics of the film noir genre.

The best of these may be double indemnity.

Kane's story of an insurance salesman and a wealthy woman who plot to get rid of her husband and pocket the proceeds from his generous policy.

But there were also the postman always rings twice and Mildred Pierce just to name a few.

Mr. Kane was born on July 1st, 1892, and today, as a belated birthday celebration, we'll hear a couple of his stories recreated for radio.

First up is an episode of Suspense, an hour-long adaptation of Kane's 1942 novel Love's Lovely Counterfeit.

Originally aired on January 17th, 1948, it stars James Cagney as Ben Grace, the second in command for a powerful racketeer.
