Summary

This week, we take some time to process what happened in Charlottesville, and talk about how to persevere in the age of emboldened white supremacy.

Then we chat with April Ryan, the National Association of Black Journalists' "Journalist of the Year," on twenty years spent in the White House press briefing room. We check in with Vice News DC Bureau Chief Shawna Thomas and BuzzFeed political reporter Darren Sands about how they ask difficult questions and cover news in 2017.

Plus: HaSizzle, New Orleans' legendary bounce artist, reminds us that even in the darkest of times, booty-bouncing is healing. This show was taped live at One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans on August 10, 2017.

we promise. But the country is not having the best time overall. Yes, it's been a week.

0:15.9

It's been a week. It's been a lifetime. It's been a lifetime and one week. We were in New

0:20.9

Orleans for NABJ, the National Association of Black Journalists and we were all set for

0:27.7

a good time, sweating way too much and drinking way too much and eating way too much. We did

0:32.3

all of those things but we did it with the knowledge that the world has kind of fallen

apart around us. Charlottesville happened and you've got the... It was really like watching...

I mean, I wasn't alive during the 60s so I can't confidently compare the two. But I did

wonder, I was like watching like news footage of people like trying to stab other humans

with the Confederate flag. I was like, what year are we in? So not to spoil the show

1:04.8

fiala anything but we talked to April Ryan who was at NABJ because she was receiving

1:09.7

the Journalist of the Year award which shout out to her. So we asked April about white

1:14.4

supremacist violence that happened before the violence of Charlottesville. I asked the

1:22.4

question, I wasn't being flip it. I feel like these are emboldened times and I'm curious

1:27.6

how other black people are dealing with just how outright and emboldened white people

1:32.5

are with their hatred. How have you been dealing with emboldened white people Tracy?

1:37.0

I don't know that I have just yet. I'm a very big advocate of hitting the

1:42.9

pause button when things are too rough because with the 24 hour news cycle and with everybody

1:48.7

being on wifi all the time, like you can really have a constant unending stream of just stress

1:54.2

and violence and trauma. And a lot of times we forget that we have off buttons and then

1:59.7

we can hit the off buttons and just like take a breath and regenerate, drink some water,
