I'm Alistair, your host, and this week we are going back to the future. This year, EscapePod turns 20, and one of the things we're doing to celebrate is turning

Flashback Friday into a journey up through those two decades of tomorrow's.

I'll be your host for these episodes, and the editorial team have come up with a very cool spin

on the initial idea which I brought to them of Let's Do the Big Numbers.

You see, several of these episodes are from the sort of

big names that demand capitalization on both the big and the names, and that's awesome because

those stories were foundational to so much of Western science fiction. But the thing about

foundations is you build on them, and you can only do that by moving past them. That is not

intended as a slight to any of these authors, but instead a means of standing up on these

rocks of genre and examining the newer, fresher perspectives and experiences offered by

building on those foundations. Going boldly, as the saying goes.

That brings us to Imperial, our very first episode, and Jonathan Sullivan,

a Marine, a doctor, a martial artist, and now a strength coach,

Dr. Sullivan was the first author aboard the Escape Pod,

and it is a true honour to revisit

that story here today as we start our new journey into decade number three.
