Summary

EP. 152: In this episode, I’m unpacking the latest data on long covid and exercise. Contrary to conventional wisdom advising against physical activity for post-viral syndrome, I push back, drawing from my own experience with a similar condition dating back to my teenage years, and insights from recent studies. From dissecting mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction to scrutinizing the effects of various exercise modalities, I emphasize the significance of movement and cultivating a supportive network. Tune in as we untangle the intricacies of long covid and reshape the conversation surrounding exercise and recuperation. On this episode of the Dr. Tina Show, The Quick and Dirty, I'm going to be talking with you about some recent data that's come out around long COVID and exercise.

0:17.0

Now, it's been long assumed and recommended that if you have post-exertional malaise due to any type of condition, most notably around viral infections, long COVID, we called it post-viral syndrome before it was a thing with COVID.

0:34.0

This is something I have struggled with since I was 19 years old with a different virus.

0:38.6

It can come on from the flu. It can come on from any variety of viruses. And the going

0:44.6

recommendations is to not exercise. That's honestly, but what the going recommendations have been.

0:51.8

And particularly around long COVID, the recommendations are to not

0:55.8

exercise. And I think that's just bonkers. And here's why. Because say you were really

1:02.3

fit and you got slammed by a virus and now you're dealing with the post-viral sequelae, and you can't

1:08.0

get up and you feel awful. Exercise seems really like a long reach, right? It seems

1:14.1

like something that is not only going to be difficult to do, but it's potentially going to

1:18.6

cause you to flare or rebound in a negative way. I get it. I've been there. I completely understand.

1:25.4

The other problem, though, is say you went into it really deconditioned, and let's just

1:31.6

be honest here, most Americans are severely deconditioned.

1:36.0

So say you went into it deconditioned, if you don't exercise, even if it's hard, you're

1:42.1

just going to end up more deconditioned.

1:45.9

Really, what's at the root of all of these long viral syndromes is mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial fatigue. So you've got these

1:53.1

pooped out mitochondria most often going in. Then you get slammed with the virus and now on the other

1:58.9

side your mitochondria are fried.

2:01.6

You're fried.

2:03.4

You've got adrenal fatigue.

2:06.6

Definitely COVID tends to push people over the edge.
