Ethiopia has been rocked by over a year of fighting between the government and the Tigray

Western media reports largely described the conflict as perpetrated by the Ethiopian government, which is brutally repressing the minority Tigray ethnic group and committing egregious human rights abuses.

But unsurprisingly, the story is much more complex.

Yet as a result of the Civil War, the Biden administration has taken measures to punish the country,

Rania, why don't we start by just having you explain the two sides?

Well, okay, you've got obviously the government side led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in the last few years after decades of really dictatorial rule by the Tigray People's Liberation Front or the TPLF.

They were in charge of Ethiopia since the 90s. They were a very close ally of the United States and in many ways acted as kind of like the police of the U.S. in the Horn of Africa.

They fought with the Eritreans in the 90s. They invaded Somalia in collaboration with the Bush administration over the so-called war on terror in the early 2000s.

And they behaved in a really brutal way.
