is at cruising altitude on a flight between New York's JFK airport and Geneva, Switzerland.

About one hour into the flight, the captain and first officer think they smell smoke.

The crew decides to land at a nearby airport and asks ATC to direct them to Boston,

but ATC suggests Halifax since it's much closer.
