I'm delighted to be joined today for this first in a new series of Insights podcast by Janet Gunter and

Hugo Valoury, the co-founders of the Restart Project. Restart is a charity and a people-powered

social enterprise aiming to fix our relationship with electronics. And they do that by both helping

people learn how to repair their broken electronics and to rethink how they consume them in the first place.

Designers and engineers are ready today, yesterday, weeks ago. In fact, they really enjoy

challenges like this. This is the innovation for this. Not the screen that only an eagle can see

because we don't actually have that good eyesight. I was really keen to speak to both Janet and Hugo today because we're just about to launch a new report for the Circular Economy Task Force

that looks at the problem of electronic waste and what we think needs to be done to fix it.

As was widely reported a few months ago when a UN report into global e-waste was released,

the UK has a particular problem with electronics,

producing more e-waste per head than any country in the world

apart from somewhat surprisingly Norway.

Personally, I found that fairly shocking,

as that means that our electronic waste

adds strips what's produced in places like China and the US,

where the electronics are notoriously larger than they are here.

But perhaps that didn't come as a surprise to you, Janet and Hugo, as you work at the

Coalface helping people repair their electronics. I wonder if you could explain a bit more about the
