Authorities say two people are dead and six injured after a mass shooting at Florida State University.

Police say the suspected gunman opened fire near the Student Union on the main campus in

Tallahassee just before noon.

He's been identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Eichner. Sheriff Walter McNeil says the young man is an

FSU student and the son of a local county sheriff's deputy, and he's in the hospital.

Our deputy, Deputy Eichner, has been with the Learne County Sheriff's Office for over 18 years. She has a

tremendous job that she's done. Her service to this community has

been exceptional. Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons, and that was one of the

weapons that was found at the scene. A law enforcement official says the suspect had a handgun

at the time of his arrest, another gun in his vehicle, and

they found a shotgun in the Student Union.

Law enforcement officials are asking students to stay away from active crime scene areas.

FSU says all classes in school events have been canceled through tomorrow.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments in May over President Donald Trump's plan to end birthright citizenship.
