Summary

Today, we talk about gaslighting. I'm amazed by the number of people who aren't sure what gaslighting is and don't even know they are being victims of it. To help me explain what gaslighting is and why it is a form of abuse, I'll share some situations I've experienced during my previous marriage with my ex-husband.

When someone is being abused, their friends and relatives will most likely advise them to leave that relationship. In most cases, the abused won't leave their abuser, not because they don't want to, but because they can't, because being in an abusive relationship feels safer for the victim's system than being alone. Gaslighting is a form of abuse, and we must approach its victims with compassion and empathy.

0:41.8	don't understand what gaslighting is and are often really surprised that within their
0:46.7	relationship, they have also been the victims of the narcissist and gaslighting. And I certainly know
0:53.5	I can relate to this. So I thought I would
0:55.7	do an episode on this, just to give you some examples from what I went through to see if you can
1:01.3	relate. And also for you, just to understand that gaslighting is abuse. This isn't just somebody
1:08.4	who's being a little bit mean or a little bit nasty to you.
1:12.9	You know, gaslighting happens over a prolonged period of time where it really leaves you
1:18.2	doubting your sanity, feeling like you are the crazy one in all of this.
1:23.3	And you aren't, you absolutely aren't.
1:26.2	But when you're in that situation and you're constantly
1:28.6	being either questioned or that manipulation and coercion that can happen, you really start
1:34.8	to lose your sense of self. So I thought to explain this to you. I'd give you really a couple of
1:40.0	examples that happened to me. Because when I came out of my relationship with my ex-husband, gosh, sort of 10 years ago now,
1:47.8	and I remember my therapist saying to me about being abused and psychologically abused
1:52.7	and go and Google narcissist.
1:55.3	And all of these things were so new to me that I really didn't believe it. I just genuinely thought I'd been in a marriage
