Summary

These chapters of Genesis cover some dark terrain, things that ought not be done in Israel (34:7). Shechem violates Dinah. Two of his others sons—Simeon and Levi—commit a war crime. And Esau’s descent away from God’s people is finally codified through his genealogy (Gen. 36).

What’s God up to in Genesis 34–36? Even amidst his chosen people’s sin and wickedness, he’s still preserving and preparing them for his purposes.

Number one, this is more of a structural comment about how I think the logic of Genesis works.

0:11.0

Throughout Genesis, I think Moses sets up problems that then he resolves in subsequent stories.

So, for instance, you have the problem of the sons of God taking and

raping the daughters of man and the violence of the earth, and that's solved by God's

judgment in the flood.

Friends, last week we covered Genesis 32 through 33, and we more or less wrapped up the long

1:00.8

simmering tension between Jacob and Esau. And if you remember, I'm sure that you do, in light

1:06.1

of Jacob wrestling with God, I made an unseemly amount of references to professional wrestling. I don't think

1:13.4

we'll have any of those this week, but we'll see. This week, we're going to cover Genesis 34 through 36.

1:18.6

We begin with the tragic story of the defiling of Dinah, and then we're going to end with another

1:24.2

transition point in the book of Genesis, moving from Jacob as the point of focus to

1:28.9

Joseph. After today, the rest of our time in Genesis will focus on Jacob's beloved son, Joseph. So, Jim,

1:36.4

let's begin there with Genesis 34. And similar to Genesis 19 with Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah,

1:43.2

this is a dark text and a dark story. So tell us what

1:47.0

happens. And let's focus for now, at least, on the sort of principal crime, what happens in

1:51.7

verses 1 to 7. And then a bit later, we can talk about the aftermath. Well, the first thing I'd like to do,

1:58.1

just to slightly broaden the frame, is to observe the way that this chapter anticipates things that will come later.

2:06.6

So one of the fascinating aspects of this chapter is that later in the Pentateuch, Israel is going to be warned against intermarrying with the Canaanites in the land because of their sexual perversity.
