Summary

Gloria Allen is a legendary figure in Chicago's trans community. The 76-year-old joins us to talk about coming out as trans in the 1960s, why her family's support was so transformational, and the extraordinary impact that her charm school had on LGBTQ+ youth in Chicago. Mama Gloria, a new documentary by Luchina Fisher, is now streaming on PBS.

50, 60 years ago, and as you'll hear, it changed her entire life.

Gloria Allen has gone on to become a fixture in the Chicago trans community.

For years, she was known for a charm school where she worked with and mentored queer and trans kids,

many of whom lived on the street.

And Gloria's story was recently turned into a fantastic documentary called Mama Gloria.
