Summary

Logan Paul Gage is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Dr. Gage received his B.A. in history, philosophy, and American studies from Whitworth College (2004) and his M.A. (2011) and Ph.D. (2014) in philosophy from Baylor University. His dissertation, written under the supervision of Trent Dougherty, was a defense of the phenomenal conception of evidence and conservative principles in epistemology. It won Baylor University’s 2014-2015 Outstanding Dissertation Award(Humanities Division). His philosophical specialties (and the majority of his publications) are in epistemology and philosophy of religion. But he also has broad interests in ethics, metaphysics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, and the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.

0:10.9	Yeah, yeah, I've been here about 10 years and I work mostly in epistemology and natural theology.
0:16.2	As a kid, did you have a conversion, an intellectual conversion at some point?
0:20.8	Yeah, yeah.
0:21.4	So my dad's actually a Southern Baptist pastor, and but I between the years of 14 and 16, I had kind of a religious conversion.
0:29.2	And so I've always been interested in whether God exists, whether religious beliefs are justified or reasonable,
0:36.0	how we can know whether they are, that sort of thing.
0:39.0	Those have always been pretty personal questions and yeah, and I've always been interested, especially because I grew a Protestant.
0:45.6	I guess I wasn't as interested as an evangelical in like sorting out every detail of theology,
0:51.3	but more of these big picture questions right like is there
0:54.2	God in the first place and can religious beliefs be reasonable more so than like
0:58.8	should I be an Armenian or a Calvinist on this or that point of doctrine or something because I you know in
1:04.3	the evangelical culture that I grew up in it didn't feel like really we had a way to
1:08.1	sort out all the true doctrine really easily like everybody had their take but I was
1:12.2	just more interested in the big picture
1:13.6	question sort of atheism versus theism because if much God doesn't exist the
1:17.4	rest of the questions don't matter yeah and it felt like those were more
1:19.4	tractable to me than some of the finer details of theology.
1:22.9	If you don't think there's a true church, right?
1:24.7	How are you ever going to sort out all those fine details?
1:26.8	It felt like speculation to me.
