Summary

What does it mean that Jesus is called Immanuel, or God with us? Every other religion was founded by someone who was a prophet or a teacher who came to tell us how to find God—but Christianity says, “No, our Founder, Jesus Christ, is God come to find you.” This sermon will consider three things about Jesus Christ as Immanuel: 1) He is God; 2) He is us (human); and 3) He’s with us. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 12, 2010. Series: To Know the Living God – The God Who Can Be Known. Scripture: Matthew 1. Today's podcast is brought to you by Gospel in Life, the site for all sermons, books, study guides and resources from Timothy Keller and Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Our scripture reading this evening is from the Book of Matthew chapter 1 verses 18 through

0:26.5

chapter 5. This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. His mother Mary was pledged

0:33.2

to be married to Joseph, but before they came together she was found to be with child

0:37.9

through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not

0:43.3

want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after

0:49.8

he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph,

0:54.9

Son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived

0:59.8

in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you are to give him the

1:04.8

name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill

1:11.5

what the Lord had said through the prophet. The Virgin will be with child and will give

1:16.3

birth to a son and they will call him a manual, which means God is with us.

1:23.4

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary

1:27.8

home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son and he gave

1:33.9

him the name Jesus. This is the word of the Lord.

1:43.9

At Christmas we sing O'Como come a manual. Because a manual is the name given to Jesus

1:51.4

in one of the two annunciation texts. There are two places, one in Matthew, one in Luke,

1:58.2

where an angel announces the birth of Jesus. At Christmas, a manual is one of the names

2:05.1

of Jesus that we speak about and that we talk about. All I want to do tonight is to

2:12.9

meditate with you through this particular text, this particular little story and account.
