Well, welcome to this closing session of our one-day conference today.

I'm really delighted to welcome Darren Jones, who is of course MP for Bristol Northwest,

and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury who's going to be giving the closing keynote.

The issues had a strong interest in the Treasury for a long time, I guess, throughout our entire existence, because of the powerful

role that it plays in government. Most recently, we completed a project that we began

during Liz Truss' government on Treasury Orthodoxy, in which we looked at what the guiding principles

are which shape the Treasury and the positive and negative impacts that those have on government.

Last year, our Centre Commission considered the role of the Treasury in the centre of government

and made recommendations about how a Prime Minister can ensure spending decisions reflect his or her priorities.

And most recently, we published a report on how to run a multi-year spending review,

something that I think Darren might have been giving a better thought to. So we're really, really delighted to have

Well, good evening, everybody, and thank you so much for having me to speak with you today.

I'm going to give a short speech, but I often find

the Q&A is more interesting. So I hope you've got a lot of great questions for us to chat about

afterwards. But in my opening remarks, I really just want to talk about the future and to explain

how this government is delivering on our promise of change. I'll focus on the three main areas of my responsibility

as Chief Secretary to the Treasury,

public spending, infrastructure, and digital transformation.

And we'll explain why mission-led government means that we're doing things

differently so that the Prime Minister's priorities, the plan for change,

can be delivered and prove to the public that governments
