Welcome to Goop Tales, episode 44, Kara Lest and Cleopatra's underwater palace.

0:15.6

I'm Maria Kalanchini, and I'm the author of Goop Tales.

0:20.4

So today's episode was inspired by an actual underwater city or sometimes called a palace,

0:30.3

which I recently just did a bit of research on.

0:34.3

And it was Cleopatra's palace, Cleopatra of Egypt, and this city was lost for

0:41.5

1600 years because it sunk down into the Mediterranean Sea after there were earthquakes and tidal wave

0:52.2

that, I think a tidal wave, that basically caused the land to shift and

0:57.8

the city sunk undersea and it was over, I think about 20 years ago that they, archaeologists

1:04.6

discovered this underwater city that was remains of the palace of Cleopatra. So it's called Cleopatra's palace.

1:12.6

So they found all sorts of really, really cool stone statues underneath there,

1:18.6

which are all featured in today's story,

1:21.6

so I'll let you discover them in the story.

1:24.6

And one word I wanted to clear up, so you're going to hear it in the

1:30.2

story, is that for a sphinx, which is like the half, with the human head and the lion body, the

1:38.6

sphinxes, the mythical creatures of old Egypt, the plural of them is sphingies. So when you hear that in the story,

1:47.2

you're going to know that I'm talking about two sphinx that are plural spinges. So I just wanted to

1:53.4

clear that up. Let's see if there's anything else before we get started. Oh, one other thing, which I'll talk about at the end, a couple of you, or more than a couple,

2:05.4

have listeners have reached out so generously and wanted to know how they could contribute to goop

2:11.0

tales.

2:11.4

And I'm just so appreciative because I really love making these.

2:15.3

So I am going to tell you what I did at the end of the story.

2:19.8

So I made that possible for you guys.
