As Christmas approaches, a third-year resident surgeon named Dr. Lauren Brunel finds herself beaten out for the big city Boston Medical Fellowship of her dreams,

relegated instead to the depressing academic limbo of the waitlist.

Not only that, but her shitty little sweater-vested boyfriend has just broken up with her at a dinner she believed would culminate in a public restaurant engagement.

But no, not so. You see, Dr. Lauren Brunel just isn't spontaneous enough.

She's a workaholic. Her life is planned to the minute no room for the kind of love that defies all her chilly logic. Sorry, Lauren, it's over.

Arriving back at her familial mansion, she speaks to her parents in the parlour.

Dr. Brunel's father, Dr. Brunel, has always encouraged his daughter to follow in his affluent workaholic footsteps.

But her keenly-observant mother senses something isn't quite right, and continuously reminds Lauren to live in the moment, telling her you can listen to your mind, but you have to follow your heart.

Unsure of her future for the very first time, she spontaneously takes a job in a small town outside Anchorage, Alaska.
