There's this saying that we use when someone does something weird or out of character.

I don't know what possessed them to do that.

It's such a common phrase that you've probably never thought about what it really means

or where it comes from.

But then I started digging into this story, which is about a 13 year old boy given the

pseudonym Roland Doe.

It made me think about that saying in a whole new way.

Roland was a sweet, gentle boy by all accounts, but in January of 1949 something happened

to him.

And in a fit of violence, Roland reportedly stabbed a priest who tried to pray with him,

maming him for life.

In the aftermath of that incident, Roland's mother found herself wondering, what could

have possessed him to do that?

Well, by all accounts, the devil.

In the winter of 1949, Roland Doe was possessed by a demon, and it made him do that.
