Could artificial intelligence play a role in reducing scientific testing on animals?

In the United States, the most recent year for which there is summary data available,

which is fiscal year 2019, we used more than 58,000 dogs, and the majority of those are beagles

because of their size and because they're docile.

We're in Kenya to find out about tech being used by dairy farmers to help them look after

their herds and making sense of this.

Can AI help us understand dog barks?

We're starting this week's program by talking about something that's long been controversial but perhaps necessary, lab testing on animals.

Animal testing is a practice which lets scientists study the development and progression of diseases

and to see how safe and effective new drugs are before being tested on humans.

But researchers have been desperate to find non-animal alternatives for years.

So could artificial intelligence be the answer?

Science and technology reporter Christine Roe has been looking
