Los Angeles, early 1942.

George Takeh was five years old.

He had just woken up.

That morning, my father came into our bedroom, dressed us hurriedly,

and told us to wait in the living room while he and our mother did some last-minute packing in their

bedroom. Takey's brother, Henry, was four. His sister Nancy was a toddler.

There was nothing to do in the living room, so we stood by the front window, just gazing out at the neighborhood.

Suddenly, we saw two soldiers marching up our driveway. They carried rifles with shiny bayonets on them. They stomped up the steps onto the porch,

and then with their fists began banging on our front door. Henry and I were frozen. We were

paralyzed with fear. My father came running out of his bedroom, answered the door, and they pointed the bayonets at my father. They told to him our father to move your family out.

Taki's father, Norman, gave George and Henry each

a small box tied with twine to carry.

Norman himself lifted two heavy suitcases.

And we followed him out down the steps

and onto the driveway

and waited for our mother to come out.
