Summary

Johnathan Bi joins me for a conversation about the great books of the West, how literature shapes our moral and legal systems, mimetic desire and the physics of human nature, what Nietzsche would think about today’s victimhood culture, and how monogamy satisfies our innate competitive drive. Johnathan Bi is the co-founder of Opto Investments and a philosopher focusing on the great books of the West, human nature, and Rene Girard’s mimetic theory.

It was an inability of my internal world, of being aligned in a proper way.

And because that was the issue, I tried everything.

I tried to like psychedelics, therapy, like all the meditation.

But it was really the great books and philosophy and literature that I saw was an instruction manual for living a good life.

A bone that I have to pick is this whole idea that we have identified the word myth with

0:22.1

untruth in the West. And it couldn't be further from the truth. You abstract out the essence,

0:27.9

the moral essence of like, what did we learn from all of this? And you get all of that compressed into

0:32.8

this very palatable narrative. You don't need to have interacted with Jesus of Nazareth to imitate Jesus of

0:38.5

Nazareth just the stories that have been told about him. When things are working, you don't necessarily

0:43.2

need to go to the foundational layer of these ideas. You don't need to ask what it is money. That's a

great example. The world is in flux. And that's why we need to revisit these great books because

0:53.2

they contain the source

code of civilization. It almost starts to feel to me like an owner's manual for being human, right?

It's like you're, yeah, totally.

Now, if this is your first time listening to The What Is Money Show, I strongly recommend that

1:24.1

you go back to episodes one through nine first, which lays a lot of the groundwork

1:29.1

for many of the concepts that we explore on the show. These first nine episodes are my series

with Michael Saylor, and thousands of people have told me that this is the best podcast series

1:38.8

they've ever heard, hands down, and that it was instrumental to their understanding of money and Bitcoin.
