Summary

The weekend. Social Security. Health insurance. What do these things have in common? They all exist thanks to the advocacy of labor unions. In this episode of TED Talks Daily, another podcast from the TED Audio Collective, political economist Margaret Levi explains how these organizations forge equality and protect worker rights, calling for a 21st-century revival of the labor movement in order to build a more equitable future.

0:09.0	I don't know about you, but I am a big fan of weekends.
0:12.0	Not my most controversial opinion.
0:13.9	Weekends are pretty popular.
0:15.3	And here in the United States,
0:16.7	today is a Monday, but it's also still the weekend
0:19.1	because it's a federal holiday called Labor Day.
0:22.1	Now, I love a long weekend. I think that we all need some
0:25.8	rest, we all need some time off. We all are better when we get a chance to just
0:31.3	restore our energy and recharge.
0:34.4	And without days off, things can get a little scary.
0:37.2	That is not a recipe for how to have a thriving society.
0:40.3	And it's kind of wild to me to realize that weekends are something that we didn't always have.
0:45.3	They were fought for and they were won as a standard practice because of labor unions.
0:50.7	So today to celebrate Labor Day, to celebrate the fact that we have weekends we are
