Hello this is six minute English from BBC learning English. I'm Phil. And I'm Beth.

0:13.6

Are you a big reader, Phil?

0:15.1

Sure, I enjoy reading, and it's also a great way to pass the time

0:19.4

on my daily commute to work.

0:21.5

But reading isn't just a nice thing to do. It's an essential skill, something

0:26.1

you need for everyday activities, whether that's finding out the news by reading a newspaper,

0:32.4

or buying groceries by reading the labels.

1:27.6

read and write, with a day of celebration called International Literacy Day, but when does it take place?

1:36.2

Is it A the 8th of March, B the 8th of June, or C the 8th of September? I think International Literacy Day is on the 8th of September.

1:48.3

Okay Phil, we'll find out if that's correct at the end of the programme.

1:56.4

The biggest reason people grow up illiterate is not going to school, and that's especially true for people living in the coastal towns of Bangladesh.

2:02.8

Because these towns flood regularly,

2:05.2

families are always on the move,

2:07.5

making it hard for children to get an education.
