An apparent rash of squatting at various states all enabled by laws

relatively friendly to those predatory people who just take over an owner's property.

Whether their squatters or trespassers isn't just unclear in the short term.

It also means property owners end up in court against the people who are gaming state laws.

Kyle Sweetland at the Pacific Legal Foundation has dug into what states can do to return to a more rational system.

We spoke last month in Phoenix.

Due in part to viral videos and a couple of high profile cases of squatting.

This issue has really sort of leaped to the fore

as people are thinking, oh my goodness,

am I susceptible to this?

Could someone come into a property that I own

and just squat there and would take me a year or more

to finally get them out of there?

My only association or only real knowledge of squatting comes from a joke on 30 Rock in which a woman kicks her boyfriend out of her apartment and he says,

you can't kick me out, I you and then she says something else and he

says you can't kick me out I've got squatters rights and so it's not something

that's been at top of my mind at all ever until this year and trying to understand what the state institutions are that are meant to deal with it.

So give us a sense of the size and scope of the problem.

Yeah, yeah, certainly. You know, it's it certainly has become a big issue

just because you see the news and people are aware of that. You know, in the Biden administration has even come out and said that this is an issue that states need to address.
