Best advice I've ever received was from an old boyfriend many, many years ago now in the time before my marriage,

approximately 150 years or so. He wasn't much of a boyfriend, but this little piece of

advice ended up being far more useful than the relationship ever was. He told me, always be where

you're supposed to be. He said he learned this after agreeing

to drive a family member to a sketchy part of town, knowing neither of them had any good reason to go there.

He soon found himself in the crossfire of a gang shootout. He says he just kept thinking, I'm not

supposed to be here. I knew I wasn't supposed to be here.

Over the years, I have found his advice is not always limited to geography, although when paired

with my husband's favorite rule of thumb, never go to a second location. It's kept to me out of some

bad areas. That being said, I believe this advice applies to everything in life.

Aren't we all guilty of being somewhere we have no business being from time to time?

That toxic relationship, that dead-end job, that social event that is way too swanky or far too shallow.

Maybe it's still living with your parents when really you should be finding your own personal space.

Or maybe it's drinking alone when you should be socializing with friends.

Whatever the case, we've all been there.

We all have that small, quiet voice inside us that tells us this is not a great idea,

or you have no business being here right now. And when we ignore that voice, havoc erupts.

We find ourselves ducking bullets behind dilapidated playground equipment, wishing we just said no.

Some call that the voice of conscience.
