Christmas is a time for celebration.

Lights, parties, gifts, but not for everyone. Sometimes, for some people, Christmas is a reminder of loss. It doesn't feel like a celebration. It feels like grief. That is when you are closest to the true spirit of Christmas. This is the season in which we recognize and give thanks for a baby who turned into a man,

who turned into forgiveness. This baby went on to take our rage, our bitterness, our grief,

our sin. His coming is hope, hope that death is ultimately defeated, that this life is not our last.

He was born into a sinful and grieving world so that we could know there is a God who created us

and who sacrificed to bring us to him because he loves us so much.

And is love really love if there is no sacrifice?

If you are feeling sad or isolated this Christmas, just know you are closest to him right now.

You are closest to the purpose of Christmas, the reminder that we have

not been abandoned to our own pain, that God sacrificed to come close to us and walk with

us, that there is more than this mortal coil. Rejoice, for he has come near and embraced you in your weariness. When Christmas

doesn't feel like Christmas, that's when you're closest to the true meaning of Christmas.
