It is only remote if you are not standing here, as Bjadni's family has been and will continue to do, noticing when the snow

comes later and thinner each year, noticing the storms becoming more frequent, noticing that the

puffins are so few some years because there is little for them to eat. It is the nexus of so many

relationships which hang in the balance,

the flow of ocean currents, the regulation of the world's temperatures,

Sarah Thomas is a writer and filmmaker based in Scotland. Her recent book, The Ravens Ness,

describes her experience of living in the West Fjords of Iceland over a decade ago. It's a fascinating and illuminating description of Icelandic culture and landscape, weaved through her personal story of love and then divorce.
