Hey everyone, Jody here back on a Sunday with what we're calling our Some Sunday context series.

On Sundays, as we track the first year of the second Trump administration, we'll be doing episodes

that try and use history to give us a little grounding for how it's all playing out.

And as you've been hearing, sometimes that will be all of us getting

together to chat about the latest news, and sometimes it'll be highlighting a story from the This

This Day archives, like today. Look, for as much as the news is lately dominated by Elon Musk and

the executive orders and the brewing court battles, as Trump attempts to dismantle the rule of government,

as we know it, it is worth remembering that the animating issue for Trump and for much of the MAGA

movement has been and remains immigration. Ice efforts continue to ramp up, threats to shut down

the border and a plan to reopen Guantanamo. This is the engine

that drives passion for so much of the modern Republican Party, and it's the issue that often

helps the more mainstream parts of the party, the senators and the suburban moms, find

common cause with many of the most dangerous bigoted parts of the MAGA coalition.

But this wasn't always the case.

Just a generation or two ago, immigration was hardly a top issue for many Republicans,

and then came along Pat Buchanan and many others like him,

who took the issue and poured rocket fuel onto it in the 90s.

Once fringe ideas became central characters who were once ostracized,

all of a sudden became core to the Republican ethos.

So here's an episode we did when our very own Nicole Hemmer released a book about Buchanan and others.
