There are certain people in our society that we innately want to protect, like children, the elderly, people who are pregnant or sick, or like in our case for today, people with disabilities.

I remember hearing this story back in 2018 and it stuck with me throughout the years.

It's about a 19 year old girl from Evansville, Indiana named Alia Beggarly. Throughout Alia's short time on Earth, she was wheelchair bound, nonverbal, and she suffered from seizures.

But even though her mental function was at the level of a six month old infant, Alia changed so many lives.

1:09.0

According to her family, she was always smiling and laughing, and she loved everyone. Because of Alia's disability, she didn't know that there was evil in the world. She trusted everyone that she came into contact with.

And sadly, someone would take advantage of that. In the early morning hours of July 17, 2016, someone would walk up to Alia's bedroom window and kidnap her from her bed, leaving behind her wheelchair and seizure medication.

1:45.0

And for the next eight months, no one knew where Alia was or what happened to her. That is until March of 2017. When her body was discovered in an abandoned home, Alia Beggarly was so decomposed, they weren't able to determine a cause of death.

But soon enough, there was evidence that she had been sexually assaulted. In this case is frustrating to say the least. Because Alia's kidnapper is currently in jail, but he wasn't convicted of her murder, and his punishment for kidnapping and raping a disabled girl, all of which led to her death, was a mere 17 years in prison.
