I'm Matt Chorley in Brussels on day four of our special series of podcasts trying to explain what is happening in British politics this week.

Here in Brussels, EU leaders have agreed to an extension to Article 50, so Britain will not be leaving the EU without a deal this Friday.

The extension is now for the end of October.

It's longer than Theresa May wanted.

It's shorter than the EU wanted. During this episode, I'm going to try to explain what happens at these EU summits.

There are still lots of questions.

Will we really leave at the end of October?

Is there a chance we can leave before that? And most importantly, why on earth do they do these

summits in the middle of the night? This is the slightly strange story of how a Brussels summit works.
