Intraosseous vascular access was was developed for use in adult trauma patients over 80 years ago.  Only recently has this technique regained popularity for rapid and safe access to the vascular space in patients in extremis.

Today I want to talk about something that's unique for a intensive care unit,

and that is intra-ausius vascular access.

When we typically think of intra-a-saccess,

we're usually thinking of children who are an extremist

and typically maybe a pediatric advanced life support class.

But intra-o-officious access has gained more and more of a legitimacy in use of adults, particularly

what we've learned in the Iraq War.

If you look at the number of casualties that are inflicted two people rendering care under fire,

it's a significant problem.

And certainly, starting intravascular access in somebody who's an extremist

in a hostile environment is something that puts the care provider at significant risk.

We know from previous investigations in civilian EMF systems that the time it takes a start

at a profile IV can sometimes be eight or in excess of 10 minutes.

Now we can have an entire discussion on what is the role of starting IV access and somebody

following a traumatic injury.

And that would be a separate podcast just in itself.

But today I want to focus on obtaining, not vascular access, but obtaining access to administer

IV fluids, blood, and medications

in a crisis, in a current situation, and doing it with significant,

reproducible results and doing it in a quick time.
