Summary

Benjamin finally gets a chance to try a Vision Pro for himself. iOS 18 beta 3 includes some welcome changes to the Photos app and the emoji keyboard, and tvOS beta adds InSight for the first time. There’s also rumors of a rigid plastic Apple Watch, and Ming-Chi Kuo lays out a roadmap for the iPhone’s telephoto zoom lens.

And in Happy Hour Plus, Benjamin talks about visiting the Battersea Apple Store, and camping at Silverstone this past weekend, as Apple simultaneously christened its ‘F1’ movie. Subscribe at 9to5mac.com/join.

IOS 18 beta 3 is here Mayo.

0:04.0

When I updated, I was surprised to see they've made changes to the home screen customization.

0:08.0

But they haven't changed the tinting.

0:11.0

They haven't changed basically any any of the things they showed at

0:14.4

W. W. D.C. But what they did do is they added this new feature that can turn

0:18.6

basically all of your icon, your app icons, dark mode. So this is tied to the new customized menu, you go there and you can either.

0:26.5

Choose automatic, dark mode. Then once you do that, basically every icon will change to have a dark mode version even if the app itself doesn't support it and if it can't actually turn that icon into dark mode it just puts like a dark tint over the icon.

0:43.0

Yeah, it's like a dark tint over the icon. Yeah, it's like an overlay darkening if you can't change it, yeah.

0:48.0

And I think how this is working is they're basically using some sort of image separation machine learning algorithm to where

0:55.9

if the app icon has like a distinct background and a distinct foreground.

1:01.2

It basically just changes the background from whatever it's normal color is to black.

1:06.0

I mean, they're helped by the modern, like, IOS design state of affairs where so many icons are just like a white background and then a solid shape in the center.

1:16.7

So it's quite easy in a lot of cases to determine what counts as a foreground, color, and what counts as the background.

1:23.2

Because if you look at something like Instagram

1:25.2

with this feature, it doesn't work with that app icon.

1:28.0

It just puts the dark tent over it.

1:29.7

It doesn't actually change the icon itself.

1:32.3

And that'd be, Instagram doesn't have that

1:34.5

distinct background and foreground. I think it's because the background isn't like a

1:38.4

solid color because it's like a gradient it doesn't it chooses to opt out the stuff where it mostly works are where like the

1:44.5

center demo banking app is a red icon and then the white outline of the logo and

1:48.4

and that just switches so then it becomes the black background and the red becomes the center fill color.
