If I were to say the word farm to you, what image do you have in your head?

It's probably animals and fields or sheds and rolling fields and countryside and that kind of thing.

But what if you can actually build a farm, a productive farm, that conceivably could feed a village in the centre of a city or maybe in an old abandoned church, on the side of a mountain.

Recently, I went to the James Hutton Institute and Dundee, where something called vertical farming has been lauded as the way forward.

I didn't need much in the way of convincing, but Derek Stewart, director of the Advanced Plant Growth Centre, was very much the man to explain it to me. He took me to visit one of the farms that have been involved in developing.

So this is the Crop Research Centre for Intelligent Growth Solutions.

It's a demonstrator of vertical farm.

And they've spun into the James Hutton Institute because they want to work with world leading plant scientists.
