We woke up this morning to headlines we haven't seen for weeks.

Overnight, Israeli jets pounded the Gaza Strip, ending a fragile ceasefire.

Throughout Tuesday, the reported death toll there grew from 200 to 300 killed to more than 400 as we publish this.

So what is driving this bombing? What happens next? And where does it leave people in Gaza?

The nearly 2 million Palestinians and the 59 Israeli hostages still in captivity.

Emma Graham Harrison, you're a senior international correspondent with The Guardian. We've grabbed you in our studio in London, but you've been back and forth from Israel and

Palestine over the past couple of years.

What exactly happened last night?

Last night, Israel launched a very intense bombardment of the strip.

It's killed already over 400 people.

That's one of the bloodiest days

in months, if not since 2023. We are seeing on social media, we're hearing reports from

humanitarian workers who are on the ground of hospitals overwhelmed. So many bodies brought in

that they're being stacked sort of in in a corner, fires, in these tented camps where people are living, children screaming in terror through the night.

It's really a return to some of the most horrific scenes of death and destruction.
