I'm the host, Scott Feinberg, and my guest today is an actor, writer, and director

who was Oscar nominated for his tremendous portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg

in David Fincher's 2010 masterpiece social network,

and earlier this month, 14 years later, was Oscar nominated again for the original screenplay

that he wrote for a film that he also directed and stars in, 2024's A Real Pain, which is about

two very different cousins, one played by him, the other by Karen Culkin,

who are visiting Poland in tribute to their beloved late grandmother.

Over the course of a conversation at the LA offices of the Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old

and I discussed what led a shy and socially awkward kid to the stage and screen in the first place, most notably in

films such as 2002's Roger Dodger, 2005's The Squid and the Whale, and 2009's Adventureland,

how writing entered the picture, and why he shifted from writing scripts in the mold of

Adam Sandler comedies to deeply personal material, even as his acting career took off,

thanks to the commercial success of films like 2009 Zambiland and The Social Network.
