Summary

The Mountain E11 — We’ve learned that mountains in the Hebrew Bible often become a space where Heaven and Earth overlap and human beings must choose between self-preservation or surrender and trust in God. The story builds our hope and expectation for a faithful intercessor on the mountain who can mediate God’s blessings to the people below. As we turn to the New Testament, gospel writer Matthew is ready to spotlight who that faithful mountaintop intercessor is. In this episode, Jon and Tim walk through seven stories in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus prays, teaches, does miracles, and more—all on mountains.

0:09.1	and today we turn a corner as we enter the New Testament. Over the last 10 episodes, we've learned that
0:15.2	mountains in the Bible are an overlapping space of heaven and earth, where God's presence and blessing
0:20.0	can be fully experienced. This is the idea of the cosmic earth, where God's presence and blessing can be fully experienced.
0:21.6	This is the idea of the cosmic mountain, and God calls humans to ascend the mountain
0:27.6	so they can spread God's blessing and abundance to all the land. But the mountain forces a crisis,
0:32.6	where humans must decide if they will trust God's wisdom to receive his life, or will they trust their own wisdom?
0:40.4	While God calls many to ascend the mountain, most fail.
0:44.2	Which leaves us hoping for a human
0:46.7	who can succeed in ascending the mountain for us.
0:50.0	And this brings us to the story of Jesus.
0:52.5	Now you might not think of the mountain as a central theme in the stories of Jesus,
0:56.5	but the gospel writer of Matthew does.
0:59.3	Lo and behold, there are seven mountain scenes in the gospel according to Matthew.
1:03.8	You can't make the stuff up, man.
1:05.1	And they actually all connect to each other in really fascinating ways.
1:10.1	And all of them bring together the very themes that
1:13.8	we've been talking about. It's like the hand in the glove. Jesus is tested on a mountain. Jesus gives
1:19.3	his instruction to his disciples from a mountain. Jesus feeds people from a mountain. And it's on a
1:25.5	mountain where Jesus begins to shine with God's divine presence.
1:30.0	And he becomes like a heavenly being. And it's his true identity as the presence and the glory of
1:37.1	Yahweh become a human, the glory that Moses and Elijah encountered on Mount Sinai.
