Episode 98 Krista Martin

In October 1989, Krista Martin was found bludgeoned and raped in her apartment in Wichita, Kansas. Krista was a very social young woman with lots of friends and quite a bit of drama in her life – none of which led to her murder. Police investigated thoroughly, but were stumped for years. Krista’s case went cold until the WPD reopened it in 2020 with a focus on the DNA evidence. Like most of DNA: ID’s cases, this case never would have been solved without forensic genealogy – but in this case, the genealogical analysis uncovered a misattributed parentage event, and left one family relieved and thankful to have answers, and one family in complete denial and anger. We still don’t know what happened between Krista and Paul Hart on that day in 1989. But we do know the he lived just six houses away from Krista, and that he killed her.

1:08.0	On the evening of Sunday, October 1st, Michael T. decided to stop by the apartment of a new friend, a young woman he knew only as Krista.
1:16.6	Well, after midnight, on what was now October 2nd, he drove to Krista's neighborhood and parked in the driveway of the house next to hers.
1:24.6	In the dark, he walked around to the back of the house where Krista's
1:27.9	apartment was. She occupied the small, rear, ground floor unit. He walked up and opened the screen door
1:34.1	and was about to knock on her entrance door when he saw that it was slightly ajar. That was odd.
1:39.3	Krista didn't usually leave her door standing open. Mike pushed the door open wider and looked directly into the
1:45.1	apartment. It was pitch black inside, but after fumbling for some light, Mike saw that Krista lay on the
1:50.6	couch. But she hadn't fallen asleep. She was pale, her eyes wide open. She was dead. Mike knew
1:58.6	Krista did not have a phone in her apartment. He walked briskly to his
2:01.9	truck and drove quickly to the nearby fast break convenience store where he used a pay phone on the
2:07.1	corner to call Wichita Police. When he made contact with 911, he reported that he had found
2:12.6	his friend Krista dead of a possible overdose. Firefighters from Fire Station 4 were dispatched upon the report of a deceased person.
2:20.9	Wichita Police Department Officer D.K. Alexander also responded,
2:25.4	and he and the firefighters arrived at the convenience store at 109 a.m.
