Summary

I’ve decided to remove my work from Spotify.  It’s not just their recent controversies around Joe Rogan, it’s a much bigger problem with the way that Spotify treats the medium.

If you listen on an app other than Spotify, you don’t need to change anything, just stay subscribed, and you’ll get all the new episodes (Season 10 is coming soon!).

If you do listen on Spotify though, you’ll need to download a different app to keep listening.  Personally, I’m a big fan of  Pocket Casts, but there are a lot of good options out there.

Deezer

Podcast Addict

RadioPublic

Amazon Music

PodBean

There’s a million more too :).  If you can’t find HBM on your favorite app, please send an email or a tweet.

Last thing: If you’re a podcaster and you’re interested in removing your own work from Spotify, I just published an article called “How to remove your podcast from Spotify without losing (all) your listeners”.  Perhaps an overly bold title, we’ll see..

Thank you for all the support for all these years.  I really appreciate it.  Season 10 will be here soon.

Hey, it's Jeff I'm in here. I'm recording this on February 3, 2022. I just want to give

0:07.2

some context here to some stuff that is changing with Herbie monsters. The main thing is that

0:12.2

I've decided to remove Herbie monsters from Spotify. So if you're listening to this in

0:16.1

the Spotify app, from here on out, you're going to need to use another app to keep listening.

0:20.5

But on the other hand, if you're part of the 90% of Herbie monsters listeners who already

0:24.9

use some of those other apps already, then you don't need to do a thing. But yeah, Herbie monsters

0:30.7

is leaving Spotify. And I'm just going to use this episode to kind of walk you through my thinking

0:35.0

when it comes to that decision. I do want to clear up one thing up front though. Like this isn't

0:41.0

an ultimatum. It's a personal choice regarding where I feel comfortable having my own work.

0:46.0

And so yeah, there's no list of demands. The only real call to action is that I hope that if you

0:51.3

listen to this show on Spotify, my hope is that you like it enough to stick with me and keep

0:57.5

listening. So let's talk about why this is happening. You know, I've been making this show for

1:03.2

about 10 years now since 2012. From the beginning, I always wanted to make a podcast that you can

1:08.2

listen to anywhere. There was as absolutely herable as possible. Back then, podcasting was still

1:14.3

fairly new. It still felt new at least. And everyone was using this open format called RSS to

1:19.7

distribute their show in a nutshell. What RSS is, is this technology that lets anyone put their

1:25.5

own stuff out into the world. And if you put audio into an RSS feed, then you have a podcast.

1:31.6

And that's how podcasting works. Anyone can listen, anyone can broadcast. And it's just kind of

1:37.3

this like decentralized world of like open communication across the internet. And for the most

1:43.5

part, honestly, that's actually still how podcasting works. It's this thing run off of RSS feeds with

1:47.8

audio in them. But here's the thing like handful of years ago, podcasting kind of exploded and it

1:53.3

got more big and more popular and suddenly companies with a lot of money start getting involved.
