Summary

In this Fragrance Friday episode on Skin Anarchy, we step into the sensual world of niche fragrance with the founders of Liis, Alissa Sullivan and Leslie Hendin. Built on a shared obsession with scent and a decade-long friendship, Liis is a fragrance house that brings a new level of intimacy, artistry, and storytelling to the perfume space. Trained at ISIPCA and Central Saint Martins respectively, Alissa and Leslie fuse science and creativity to craft perfumes that are deeply personal and wearable.

Liis is known for creating scents that feel like a second skin—light, sheer, and long-lasting. Each fragrance is rooted in memory and emotion, designed to evoke feeling rather than overpower. A standout from the collection, Lucienne, captures brightness and clarity with notes of pomelo, lemon zest, magnolia, and marine accords, delivering a salty-citrus glow that feels fresh and luminous.

Clean beauty is a core pillar for the brand. Liis fragrances are formulated without phthalates, preservatives, or unnecessary synthetics. Everything from the recyclable packaging to the sustainably sourced ingredients reflects the founders’ California roots and commitment to conscious beauty.

The episode explores Liis’ layerable scent structure, its evolution from three original fragrances to a growing library, and what’s next—including an upcoming body care line that expands their signature scent language into new formats. Whether you're a fragrance lover or just beginning your journey, this conversation offers a behind-the-scenes look at the power of scent to tell stories and connect us to ourselves.

I have recently fallen in love with Lease fragrances. They are such a unique brand. It's niche luxury perfumery.

0:13.3

They have such an interesting collection of fragrances because I feel like it's very, very difficult these days to find a scent that really lingers for a long time

0:21.3

and also just smells like a second skin, something you can really live in and fall in love with.

0:26.1

So without me ranting too much, I want to introduce you guys to Alisa and Leslie.

0:30.3

Welcome, guys. So excited to chat.

0:31.8

Hi. Thanks so much for having us.

0:33.6

No, it's a pleasure. I absolutely adore what you've done and the whole feel of it. You know, it's just really for me personally. It's right up my alley and I can see how much thought you've put into the brand itself. And I'd love to actually dive into like the more nitty gritty later, but first learn about you guys. Like how did you meet and decide to start a fragrance brand? And where did it start? Yeah. So actually, Leslie and I, we've both been interested in perfume since we were kids.

0:59.3

And we both grew up in Marin County, which is just north of San Francisco.

1:03.0

When we met, we discovered that we were both obsessed with fragrance since childhood.

1:08.8

And this was back in, you know, 2009.

1:12.5

So it was really rare to meet someone that had the same passion as you before like, you know, social media and all that. So

1:17.2

it was such a special connection. Like we're both from the same area and we have this shared

passion. And, you know, at the time I was actually living in Europe. I had finished my master's at

1:27.4

Zipka, which is the world-renowned

1:29.4

famous perfume school in Versailles. And Leslie was about to move to Europe to pursue a master's

1:36.7

at Central St. Martin. So it was really, you know, such a special connection. And when she moved,

1:42.5

we actually lived in like the same neighborhood. So we quickly became like

best friends and, you know, really bonding over our love for for scent art and design. Yeah.

1:53.1

That's wonderful. Yeah. I love that. I love that you guys were, you know, in the same place. And I'm

1:58.2

curious, like, did you ever have moments where you were like, you know, maybe there was like a local shop or something that you both smelled that you both loved

2:05.3

and had that moment of creativity. Like, I mean, I can imagine that must be nice, right? Living in the
