Summary

Inspired by all the interest in Federal's ground-breaking new 7mm Backcountry cartridge, we recently held a live Q&A with our Patreon members. Here are the great questions we fielded and discussed:

  • Is the 7mm Backcountry, with it's 80,000 PSI chamber pressure, safe in traditional bolt-action designs?
  • I wanted a .280 Ackley. Should I switch and get a 7mm Backcountry instead?
  • Are 7mm Backcountry steel alloy cases reloadable? If so, how hard is that going to be?
  • How does the cartridge's 80,000 psi pressure affect barrel life?
  • Supposedly the 7mm Backcountry kicks a lot less than other 7mm magnums. How can that be?
  • Is it safe to fire the 80,000 psi 7mm Backcountry through my suppressor?
  • Will this cartridge be affected by the powder shortage? Should we expect to see a lack of 7mm Backcountry ammo on store shelves?
  • What's the accuracy potentail of the 7mm Backcountry cartridge?
  • What 7mm Backcountry rifle should I buy?
  • Can an existing rifle be rebarreled to 7mm Backcountry?
  • Are 7mm Backcountry steel cases coated? Or will they rust if exposed to moisture?
  • What's the best rifling twist rate for a custom 7mm Backcountry?
  • What are the characteristics of the various bullets being factory-loaded in 7mm Backcountry ammo?
  • Will we see Federal's steel Peak Alloy case technology bleed over into classic cartridges, enabling high-pressure/high-performance ammo? For example, could a .308 be made to shoot like a traditional .300 Win. Mag. load?

Hopefully this candid episode will help address concerns and clear up some myths about the 7mm Backcountry cartridge. We sure had fun talking about it. ENJOY!

All right, folks, welcome. Glad you were able to tune in today on our live Zoom call to just

filled some Q&A about the new 7MM backcountry cartridge from Federal.

0:10.8

As I think most of you tuning in here will know, this is pretty groundbreaking for the hunting

0:18.6

slash sporting industry, just in the fact that for the first time

0:23.2

we're being offered the chance to play with the level of pressures that's only been available

0:28.2

to the military for the past few years and really never used before that. So why don't we just dig

0:34.8

right in? I'm going to answer a couple of questions from Patreon that were sent in.

0:40.6

We'll start with Wes because you offered a bunch of different pretty good questions.

0:46.1

Some of these I know the answer to.

0:47.6

Some of them I've had to send off to federal to get responses to.

0:51.8

But the first one is, will there be a low pressure brass case option for the 7M back

0:57.7

country similar to what Sig offers for the 277 Fury? I have heard speculation from within federal

1:06.2

that there will be, but I haven't heard that confirmed. Kind of makes sense. I think that cartridge would be probably loaded to your traditional 65,000 PSI and easy

1:16.8

to reload, very similar to a 280 Remington cartridge.

1:21.8

Maybe a little spicier just because the 280 Remington has held the little lower chamber pressures out of courtesy to the old slide action and semi-auto rifles that it was initially chambered in.

1:35.8

Wes asked another one without a brass case's heat sink properties will pencil barrels heat up even faster.

1:42.2

You know, I don't think that's going to be an issue

1:44.6

because I don't think brass versus steel

1:47.2

can actually absorb that much heat

1:50.2

in protection of the barrel.

1:52.8

What's his next question?

1:53.9

Will case trimming be an issue?
