At 31 years old, Diane Hood was battling lupus. Lupus is a disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. And the big thing about it is it creates a slew of unexpected symptoms.

It can take a while to even be diagnosed while people are struggling with the symptoms.

And then afterwards, they are just so random, so debilitating, and it's incredibly stressful.

but, you know, for some reason, he wasn't able to really give Diane the support that she needed,

Lupus is a disease that like flares up. And so, you know, physical, even psychological stress

can really cause a lupus flare up. So having these support groups where everyone's sharing

their experiences and talking is just incredibly healing. And this is an amazing thing that Diane

needs. And while she's there,

she actually becomes really good friends with this woman named Karen. And their bond was really

special. You guys know, you know, in your 30s, it is hard to make friends. And they have this

incredibly difficult thing that they were going through together along with the other people

in the support group. And they were just close. One day in the fall when Diane and Karen are leaving their

Lupus support group, somebody comes up behind them with a gun and they shoot Diane in the shoulder.
