This is the Friends of History Debating Society. I'm John Batchel, sitting with Svetlana Lakova,

a scholar and an historian and an author, whom I met through her book about Russian intelligence operations in the United States in the 1930s,

when the Russians, who were all veteran combatants, were recruited by Joseph Stalin to present themselves as gifted students at MIT, University of Massachusetts, Yale College, Stanford University, all across the country.

And their mission initially was find out everything you know about their aeronautical engineering,

because we're going to be a fleet of airplanes like nobody else has, said Stalin,
