2:56.0 | And he wrote to Roger Waitman from Monticello declining his invitation to participate in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence. |
3:08.0 | He would become bedridden two days later in Dio in July 4th. The same day as good friend and later years John Adams passed away a few hours later, same day. |
3:20.0 | By the way, what other president died on July 4th among the founders? James Monroe died on July 4th, although not on the same day as Jefferson and Adams. |
3:36.0 | And Adams reportedly sat on his deathbed, Jefferson lives because he didn't know that Jefferson had died in the morning and Adams would die in the afternoon. |
3:46.0 | Very interesting men. They started out as quite good friends as they got to know each other. |
3:55.0 | Different political parties, they came to detest each other. They would openly criticize each other. Jefferson sought to defeat Adams and did defeat Adams. |
4:11.0 | And then as they got older, their friendship was rekindled. And they would write a lot back and forth and I have a book filled with their letters back and forth. And Adams was more the writer but Jefferson too. |
4:29.0 | In great pain from numerous ailments and all writing with his left hand since the earlier broken his right hand, which had not healed properly. And his final letter, Jefferson wrote responding to an inquiry. |
4:47.0 | Respected, sir, the kind invitation I received from you and the part of the citizens of the city of Washington to be present with them at their celebration of the 50th anniversary of American independence. |
5:02.0 | As one of the surviving signers of an instrument pregnant with our own and the fate of the world is most flattering to myself and heightened by the honorable accompaniment proposed for the comfort of such a journey. |
