Summary

In this episode, we meet Nikki with Steel Magnolia tumbler company. Nikki is a super math nerd and crafter turned bad ass business woman. As the owner, designer and creator of The Steel Magnolia, she just hit a HUGE milestone, selling her MILLIONTH cup! 🎉

When it comes to cups, Nikki is the queen of versatility, originality and quality. She intentionally designs cups with YOUR busy, on-the-go schedule in mind. As a woman business owner in a man-led business world, it hasn’t always been the easiest. However, Nikki is an expert in her craft and she knows her customers which has truly allowed her business to grow to the successful place it is now. She loves hosting TumblerCon, an annual tumbler even to test new products from top vendors + learn techniques from some of the top designers! Check out @tumblercon on Instagram to see for yourself what it’s all about!

As an artist, here are three of Nikki’s favorite tips:

  • Heat Part A of your epoxy
  • Seal, Seal, Seal!
  • Get a plastic storage bin, cut a side out of it and cover your turners to protect from dust!

Nikki's biggest piece of advice to other women in business is to LET GO OF CONTROL. Don’t kill yourself trying to do it all yourself! Remember our nemesis burnout?! Take a breath. Take a step back. Let people HELP YOU so you don’t experience burnout like Nikki did.

If you’re interested in launching your own business, whatever that may be, Nikki’s advice is to get out there and TRY, just like she did! Start small, test the waters, see if you have a passion for it and then see where it takes you! She never in her wildest dreams thought she would be where she is now, having just sold her MILLIONTH cup! You’ll never know until you TRY.

Listen to this episode to learn more about Nikki and her awesome company.

and what it's like to be a woman in the business community. So thank you Nikki for joining me.

Thanks for having me.

0:55.0

So I'm really interested. The first time we spoke, you said that you created these Tumblr Blanks.

1:02.0

And how is the creative process in designing these Tumblars?

1:07.0

So I have a degree in math. So math has always interested me. And so what I do is, first of all, I started out with cup holders.

1:16.0

I went and I measured my cup holder, my husband's cup holder, neighbors cup holders, like all these different cars, like what their cup holder size was.

1:24.0

And so that kind of was my starting point on as far as, you know, what I needed the bottoms to be.

1:30.0

And so using all my math knowledge and volumes and diameters and pie and, you know, all those numbers that most people shy away from.

1:40.0

I worked backwards in knowing, you know, hey, I want this cup to be 24 ounces.

1:46.0

Well, I know that my, my diameter has to be this to fit in a cup holder.

1:51.0

You know, I know that the walls of the Tumblr have to be this much and working backwards, I found how tall they had to be.

1:58.0

So like through that process, I literally drew up on my graph paper, all my designs, and sent it over to my supplier who, you know, helped me put it more into like a mold and an actual product.

2:12.0

He would send me the file. And then I would have that file 3D printed. And so then I would test that all out, make sure that it held the, you know, ounces that I was hoping for.

2:21.0

And then everything has to be converted like everything in China uses the milliliters and millimeters and over here were all inches and ounces.

2:29.0

So there was the conversion factor to make sure I didn't, you know, mess something up there.

2:33.0

And then once I had that 3D printed and tested it all out, then I gave the green light to make it an actual tumblr.

2:40.0

So it's a, it's a process.
