Steve Shearer awoke on the morning of January 11th, 1992 with plans to start a

remodeling job at his house. Both his father and father-in-law were going to be over to help and his 12-year-old daughter Shanda was also there to lend a hand.

Or so he thought.

When his wife Sharon went to wake her stepdaughter, she wasn't there. It was unusual, but at first they figured

there was a reasonable explanation. After they checked around the house and called friends and family

and no explanation was presented they started

driving around looking for the young girl. The only thing that Steve could imagine was that he had

accidentally locked Shanda out of the house.

He had woken up at about 3 a.m. because he heard the television on in the living room.

He just assumed that Shanda had forgotten to turn it off when she went to bed. He also noticed the kitchen door was a jar so he closed and locked it.
