This time around, 30-year military aviator and procedure specialist Karen "BattleAxe" Baetzel rejoins us to talk about respect and practical ways to avoid misunderstandings. The Cheat Sheet: Respect is an important foundation for avoiding misunderstandings. But what is it? To avoid misunderstandings, the military (across all branches) is careful to implement a common definition for certain words -- like respect. Karen "BattleAxe" Baetzel says, at its core, "respect is a take on what is right and what is wrong." Try to think back to a time when you inadvertently offended someone -- or when you were inadvertently offended -- by a perceived lack of respect during the interaction. It's possible the misunderstanding was the result of not sharing a common definition of respect. This is further complicated by the fact that respect can be a noun (abstract) and a verb (concrete). 0:27.3	I've been thinking a lot about respect and I've been getting a lot of questions in my work about what the military

0:37.9	Pop culture and the world and I wanted to share some thoughts with you might be helpful to some of your listeners
0:42.8	For one thing the military has a real special relationship with that word and
0:47.6	Part of it is because we take the effort and time to define it which kind of sounds like an understatement
0:56.1	When you think about boot camp iconic images of screaming and learning how to stand and talk and salute
1:02.4	But in the larger world knowing what people mean by the word respect means a lot and it is at the root of so many
1:11.9	misunderstandings because really when you tease it out
1:15.7	Respect is a take on what is right and what is wrong and
1:21.3	And it everybody feels like they have the market cornered on that definition
1:26.1	But we don't often sit down and make sure it's a common definition which the military does and that's why I think we are
1:33.2	We kind of have a license on the word but only because we take the time and effort to define it
1:39.5	And I want to share that with your readers because or your listeners because so many times
1:44.3	We have been in situations where we inadvertently
1:47.2	Disrespected somebody with no intent or felt
