Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Last time he was on the podcast, Jon Acuff shared something he called the notecard exercise for people who wonder how to find good mentors. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Gather a big stack of 3×5 cards. You're going to write down one person per notecard. [00:43] Ask yourself these questions. [00:52] You'll probably end up with a huge stack of cards -- or, at the very least, a good starting point. [01:31] The purpose of this exercise is to illustrate that you have so many options that don't often come to mind, and now you've got some contacts to get the ball rolling. [02:00] You can also arrange the cards on a board and reach out to your contacts one by one to see what unfolds. [02:18] To learn more about social dynamics and productivity hacks, take the Art of Charm Challenge by clicking here, or text CHARMED to 33444. And today we're going to do a little drill here called the Note Card exercise. I was talking on the show to my friend John Acuff a while back and I told him that one of the most common emails I get from people who want to start their own business or take their career in a different direction is that they just don't know anyone.

0:29.0

They could go to for advice or to look at as a role model mentor away in whatever. And John told us about what he calls the note card exercise and I'll share that with you here again today.

So you go and get a big stack of three by five cards index cards, whatever you call them and you're going to put one person. So one name per card and you're going to ask yourself the following.

0:51.0

Who do I know who is wise about career issues. This has to be somebody that you actually know and can reach out to. Then on another card you're going to write the people that you've worked with in the past.

1:02.0

Who have I worked with in the past. Then who do I know who is influential. It doesn't have to be someone famous, but just someone with influence. Who do I know that owns a business.

1:11.0

Doesn't have to be a business in your niche. Just has to be someone who is successful to any degree local restaurant owner, whatever.

1:18.0

Who do I follow online in my desired career space. What casual relationships might I have that might have impact in my career path.

1:28.0

You will end up with a huge stack of cards because you're putting one name per card in these different categories. And this is really important because what we think of it tend to think of is,

1:38.0

man, I don't know anybody who is in my career space super successful, influential that I also have a connection to who I can ask for advice. That's all going towards one person.

1:49.0

But if we separate these people into different categories, you don't have to have one person that you go to for everything. So you're going to end up with this big stack of cards.

1:57.0

And this stack will illustrate that you actually have so many options that you may have never thought of.

2:04.0

And now you've got some contacts to get the ball rolling because now you're asking specific questions about specific people in your network.

Not just one general. Who do I know that can change my whole life. And then you can also arrange the cards on a pin board, a cork board. And you can reach out to them one by one and see what comes out of it.
