Is there life on Mars?

The question sounds simple enough, but given the conflicting headlines over the years,

you could be forgiven for not really knowing.

As late as the 1960s, cosmologist Carl Sagan suggested a regular shadow on Mars might be

evidence of springtime greening, a sudden proliferation of leaves on the red

planet and in 1996 the tabloids declared life on Mars and yet we know Mars is a frozen arid desert, a planet with virtually no atmosphere without

oxygen and subject to intense radiation. My guest today, Professor Monica Grady, has devoted much of her life scientific to the search

for life in this most inhospitable place.

Monica started out studying rocks in the Yorkshire dales but then quickly became

intrigued by meteorites and so perhaps inevitably got drawn into answering one of the

biggest questions in science are we alone in the universe? Monica Grady, welcome to the
