A loving husband had shot an intruder in self-defense, but it was too late to save

his wife, who had been bludgeoned to death before the husband could come to her aid.

The husband was hailed a hero and the intruder was branded a murderer.

New statements collected years later would reopen the case and shine a spotlight on the husband.

to a red brick house on a quiet street where not everything was as it seemed. Mark Allen Winger was born November 26th, 1962 in Ohio to parents Sally who worked as a real estate agent and Gerald a technical engineer at

Ever Ready Products. Mark pursued a career in the military graduating from the

Virginia Military Institute before he served in Korea.

After his military service he stayed in the Army Ready Reserve.

At some stage Mark moved to Florida where he met a woman called Donna and the pair

started dating. They were married on March 4th 1989 in Hollywood, Florida.

Donna Ellen Brown was born November 10th, 1963 in Connecticut

to parents Sarah, who was a partner in Cornish distributors, a newspaper agency, and Robert

who worked as an insurance agent. As well as Donna, they had two other daughters.

Sarah and Robert would divorce, and Sarah remarried a man named Ira.
